What is Labiaplasty?

Many women lack confidence when it comes to their bodies. As you age, you may begin to feel self-conscious about the shape or size of your stomach, thighs, or even your genital area. Concerns about the appearance of the labia can cause issues with self-esteem, self-confidence, and sex drive.

Clinique Liposculpture serves patients in the San Diego area and has a variety of labiaplasty procedures to meet the needs of women who may be considering surgery regarding their genitalia.

What Happens During Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves changing the appearance of genitalia by changing the shape and size of the labia. Labiaplasty can be carried out to change the shape and appearance of the outer labia, inner labia, or clitoral hood.

There are three main types of labiaplasty, and your surgeon will help you decide which is the best procedure for you, depending on your needs. Edge restructuring involves removing excess tissue and stopping blood flow to the outer edge of the labia, creating a smooth, unwrinkled appearance.

The second is Laser Straight Edge, which involves using a laser to remove the darker edges along the outer side of the labia. This procedure is carried out almost entirely for cosmetic reasons

The third commonly used labiaplasty technique is central wedge restructuring. This is the most invasive form of labiaplasty, and involves cutting and removing a wedge of tissue from the thickest area of the labia minora.

Labiaplasty can be carried out under local or general anesthetic. Clinique Liposculpture’s patients are able to have the procedure carried out under a form of local anesthesia called “awake anesthesia,” which allows the patient to interact with their surgeon, increasing the likelihood of getting the outcome they want.

Labiaplasty surgery tends to take between one to two hours to complete, depending on the procedure being carried out. Usually, you will be able to return to work within a few days, and return to normal activity levels within a few weeks.

Reasons for Receiving a Labiaplasty

There are a variety of reasons you might choose to have a labiaplasty.

One of the most common for the procedure is for comfort or hygiene reasons. Some women find that an oversized or asymmetrical labia interferes with their ability to maintain cleanliness, causes chafing and discomfort, or makes it nearly impossible to wear some forms of clothing comfortably.

Another common reason for labiaplasty is concern and self-consciousness about the appearance of their labia. They perceive their inner labia as being too long, which can lead to emotional discomfort during sexual activity over concerns about how their partner may react when seeing it.

Labiaplasty and Mommy Makeovers

You may also choose to have a labiaplasty after having children, or as part of a mommy makeover.

Childbirth can cause all kinds of changes in your body, and giving birth can cause tears to the labia. For this reason, many women choose labiaplasty as part of a mommy makeover to repair any damage caused during childbirth and to restore the labia to its pre-pregnancy appearance.

Risks and Benefits of Labiaplasty

There are many benefits to getting a labiaplasty. The most obvious one is an increase in self-confidence. Many women also find that, after getting surgery, they’re more sexually satisfied. Women often find they are more confident because their genital area looks and feels like it did when they were younger. Many women also find that they are able to wear clothing that they were not able to prior to surgery.

However, labiaplasty is not without risks. Like all plastic surgeries, the most common risks include bleeding and scarring. Labiaplasty also carries the risk of nerve damage, chronic pain, or decreased or increased sensation during sexual activity; however these risks are relatively rare – especially when the surgery is performed by a renowned and qualified plastic surgeon.
